TIPA for ITIL®

  • Title / definition
    Tudor IT Process Assessment (TIPA)

TIPA® is an internationally-recognized framework for IT process assessment within organizations.

    Type
    Process assessment

    Owner
TIPA for ITIL® is owned by CRP Henri Tudor. On the tipaonline.org site this organization is described as follows: “CRP Henri Tudor in Luxembourg has been contributing to the improvement and strengthening of the innovation in enterprises and public organisations. The research centre gets its name from the brilliant engineer Henri Owen Tudor who invented Tudor batteries.” (source: tipaonline.org)

    Brief history and description
TIPA for ITIL was developed by a team of international researchers at CRP Henri Tudor who also worked on the ISO/IEC 15504 and ISO/IEC 20000 standards.

TIPA for ITIL® combines the process assessment standard (based on the ISO/IEC 15504 standard) with the ITSM best practices described in ITIL.

    TIPA helps the organization to:

Identify its strengths, weaknesses and improvement areas
Set the objectives for an improvement initiative
Monitor the progress and demonstrate the merits of improvement actions.

TIPA provides supporting materials and tools to perform an assessment. The following methods are part of the offering: (source: tipaonline.org)

    PRM: Process Reference Model

The Process Reference Model aims at defining the domain and scope of the business concerned. It defines the processes by giving a high-level description of the processes in terms of process purpose and outcomes, together with a description of the relationship between those processes.

    PAM: Process Assessment Model

The standard process definition (as specified in the PRM) is completed within a PAM with process capability indicators that will be examined during the assessment process. These indicators can be low-level activities or process work products (indicators of a performed process) and depend on the particular context of an evaluation.

TIPA assessment results include a process assessment profile, a SWOT analysis and recommendations.

    Target Audience
Organizations where assessments are performed and consultants and organizations performing assessments. People performing ITIL process roles (process managers, coordinators, etc.), people with a background in either ISO/IEC15504 or ITIL who want to become a process assessor, people involved in ITIL process implementation or improvement.

    User communities and groups
TIPA provides a membership scheme for Individuals and Organizations.

The book is available on Van Haren’s website and itSMF bookshop. The examples provided in the current version of the TIPA Handbook are based on ITIL v2.
